Preventing Wildlife Encroachment by Preventing Wildfires
The threat of dangerous wildlife in Southern California urban areas is on the rise due to the increase in forest fires brought on by inexperienced campers.

LEXINGTON, VA, September 24, 2011 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Living in the dry deserts of Southern California, we are repeatedly reminded to be careful with campfires. Many campers are not aware of the dangers that a simple spark can create. You can prevent wildfires when camping by taking just a few simple precautions that you can look up on the California Department of Fish and Game's website.

Due to the steady increase of wildfires, some caused by inexperienced campers, the number of dangerous animals coming into contact with urban environments is on the rise.

Near the San Gabriel mountain range in Los Angeles County, there is an increase in pet deaths due to coyotes. Recently, one city, Altadena, has gone so far as to post an area map with what kinds of animals were attacked and what kinds of animals performed the attacks online. Coyotes do still seem to be mainly a threat to domestic dogs and household cats. But recently, an Altadena resident, who claimed to be a "little person" posted that he was doing some gardening in his own yard when a coyote jumped his fence and chased him into his own house. When he called the police, they said there wasn't much they could do for him.

East of Altadena is another quaint little town, Sierra Madre, that also rests at the base of the San Gabriel mountain range. Here, it is not uncommon to see wildlife such as deer and coyotes wandering the streets at dawn and dusk. But now some residents are concerned about the increase in bear sightings. Even though no one has yet been attacked by the bears, it is only a matter of time before someone is, according to local officials.

There are simple things residents can do to deter the wild animals, like buying cougar urine supplies online for around $50. In addition to that, people should keep their trash at reasonable levels and remember to keep cat and dog food inside at night.

But the number one reason for such encounters of coyotes and bears, according to wildlife rangers, is forest fire. Because these animals are losing their natural environment, they are coming down the hills in search of new homes and food sources. Prevent forest fires can be very simple and involves pretty basic common sense. Instead of making a fire out in the woods, try a fire ring to ensure that the fire won' t encroach into another area. Also, you might invest in an ash disposal to put any smoldering ashes into. Both of these items can be found online at www.parknpool.com or at your local camping stores.

It is true what Smokey the Bear always said: "Only you can prevent forest fires." And only you can help out these wild creatures and save their homes, so they won't take up residence in your backyard.
