PORTLAND, OR, August 19, 2011 /24-7PressRelease/ -- The field is set for the 2011 Visa National Gymnastics Championships, to be held August 19-20 in St. Paul, Minnesota. The top twenty rhythmic gymnasts age 16 and up in the nation will be vying for national titles and spots on the U.S. National Team. Of those elite twenty, two are senior members of the Rose City Rhythmic team from right here in Portland.
The Visa Championships bring more than big names in gymnastics. They bring the best rhythmic gymnasts from across the United States together to compete for a coveted placement on the national team. The top eight finishers at the Visa Championships are automatically named to the National Team, which represents the United States at elite international competitions such as the World Championships and Pan American Games. In an Olympic year, the top competitors move on to compete at the Olympic qualifier.
When a teenage girl hears the word "Visa," she is likely to conjure images of shopping malls and instant gratification. To the "girls around the gym" at Rose City Rhythmic, Visa conjures an extraordinary achievement that is anything but instant. To Julianna Mazziotti, Visa is the competition to which only a few young women from the entire country qualify, and those gymnasts inspire her to keep working twenty-five hours every week to achieve her greatest potential as a gymnast. To Lili Considine, Visa is the goal that she thought would be unattainable five years ago - and now is told that if her training continues at her current pace, her qualification next year is possible. When Sydney and Ally Nagy, two of the younger gymnasts on the Rose City Rhythmic team, are asked about "Visa", their response is best defined by the sparkle of awe in their eyes when in unison they say "Claire and Manon!"
Claire Skach, a recent valedictorian graduate from Lincoln High School International Baccalaureate program, qualified as a member of the U.S. National Rhythmic team after finishing eighth at the 2010 Visa Championships. The 2011 Championships will be the final competition of her long and successful rhythmic gymnastics career.
Manon Chaney, an honors student at Mount Hood Community College, has trained for the last 13 years to earn the great privilege of competing with the best rhythmic gymnasts in the United States. To their honored Coach Nadine Davies, "Visa" is pride, honor and recognition that these gymnasts have earned.
